The Battle of Antietam
Our topic is 'The Battle fo Antietam' that was the first major battle of the Civil War on North soil as well as the bloodiest single day battle in American History. The battle took place on September 17, 1862 at Antietam Creek near the town of Sharpsburg, Maryland. Almost 50,000 Conferdrate troops led by General Robert E. Lee tried to invade the North, but there were intercepted by 70,000 Union troops under General Geroge McClellan.The Confederate army retreated after less than one day of fighting and the battle was considered a Union victory. However, Antietam changed the course of the Civil War while taking 23,000 casualties, including almost 14,000 Union soldiers.Also the Battle of Antietam was the result of Confederate General Lee's first invasion of the North. After a victory at the Second Battle of Bull Run, Lee decided to invade Maryland, an effort to move the fighting away form war-torn Virginia as well as cut off the North's supply lines.(S.K.)

The Battle of Antietam, otherwise known as Sharpsburg, took place on September 17, 1862.This was the first big battle in the Civil War. This battle was the single bloodiest day in American History with about 23,000 deaths in one day. On September 3, 1862, Robert E. Lee brought over 45,000 troops with him but the Union Army Major General George B. McClellan had over 70,000 troops. The Union and the Confederates fought for one day and it was a victory for the Union. The battle started at 5:30am until 5:30 that evening. Lincoln wasn't too pleased with McCellan. He thought that McCellan wasn't a good leader during battle and that he was very unorganized with the execution of the battle.(K.R.)

The Battle of Antietam That Relates to The Civil War

After Antietam, Lincoln announced that he was going to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation on January 3,1863. The Emancipation Proclamation was a proclamation stating that all slaves in all areas of the Confederacy still in battle. This proclamation didn't include the slaves on the border. This allowed african-americans to fight in the Union and the Navy.(K.R.)

The Battle of Antietam is related to the Civil War Period. In September 22. 1862, peliminary Enmancipation Proclamation freeing slaves issues by Prisident Licoln. In November 7, 1862, the president, Lincoln, replaces McClella with General Ambrose E. Burnside as the new Commander of the Army of the Potomac. Lincoln had grown impatient with McClellan's slowness to follow up on the success at Antietam, even telling him, "If you don't want to use the army, I should like to borrow it for a while."(S.K.)
